Nigeria at 66: Michael Abbey Says Government Has Failed Masses, Urges Youths to Embrace Skills

Michael Abbey from Port Harcourt has said the Nigerian government has failed the masses, urging young people to embrace skills, creativity and craft work as the country marks its 66th Independence anniversary.

Abbey gave his views to Next Africa Daily in an interview on October 1, 2026, where he spoke about Nigeria’s independence, democracy, development and the role of citizens in building the country.

According to him, one of Nigeria’s basic achievements since independence is democracy because citizens can exercise their rights through the rule of law. However, he said Nigeria has fallen short in terms of development and infrastructure, stressing that it is time for the government to step up and better the country.

Abbey said Nigerians have also lost confidence in democracy because they feel their rights can no longer be properly exercised. He, however, said the country can be shaped through creativity, urging youths to engage in skills and craft work.

He mentioned welders, scaffolders, electricians, pipe fitters and fashion designers among the skilled workers needed in the country.

He also urged Nigerians not to depend on government for everything, calling on them to return to agriculture. According to him, Nigeria has fertile land and can achieve much through agriculture.

Abbey urged Nigerians to change their mindset, work together, do something creative and remain consistent. He also appealed to the government to protect the lives of citizens, especially those in the northern part of the country.
