Africa has the land. What are we waiting for?

Africa is naturally rich in agriculture, with fertile land that can produce enough food and support a strong agricultural economy. We have the land, we have farmers, and we have people who understand farming. Yet, Africa is still struggling with high food prices and food shortages.

The problem is not simply that Africa cannot produce. High production costs, poor transportation, insecurity and weak agricultural structures continue to make farming more difficult and prevent many farmers from reaching bigger markets.

For many farmers, agriculture is still mainly about producing enough for themselves and their families. But Africa needs to think beyond that. Farming must become a serious economic sector that creates jobs, supports businesses and contributes to the continent's global economic strength.

Government support is also important. When citizens receive the right support, they can do more. Farmers need better infrastructure, access to finance, transportation and an environment where their businesses can grow.

There is also a question for wealthy Africans. Where are we investing our money? Why should so much money leave Africa when there are Africans with ideas, skills and businesses that need investment? Aliko Dangote has shown that African capital can be invested in major businesses on the continent.

More investment in agriculture could create jobs and open opportunities for millions of people. Africa already has the foundation. What we need now is the structure, investment and commitment to build on it.

If we take agriculture seriously, Africa does not have to remain only a supplier of raw materials. We can become a major force in the global agricultural economy.
