Celebrate Teachers. Then Pay Them.

Celebrate Teachers. Then Pay Them.

Today, we celebrate teachers. But beyond the speeches, messages and “Happy Teachers’ Day” wishes, we need to ask a serious question: Are we really treating our teachers the way they deserve?

A teacher is not simply someone who stands in a classroom and teaches. Teachers are among the main foundation builders of every society. Before we have doctors, journalists, bankers, engineers, lawyers and other professionals, there is a teacher who helped build the foundation.

Yet, in Nigeria, many teachers work long hours, wake up early, return home late and sometimes put in extra hours without receiving the kind of pay and appreciation their work deserves. That should concern us.

Some parents also need to change their attitude towards teachers. Insulting them, speaking to them without respect or looking down on them is wrong. A child who may be difficult to control at home can receive discipline, guidance and proper direction from a teacher because teaching is not just a job; it is a profession that requires patience, knowledge and responsibility.

Government also has a major role to play. If we truly celebrate teachers, that celebration should go beyond ceremonies. Teachers need fair treatment, better working conditions and pay that reflects the importance of what they do.

We cannot continue to expect teachers to work like an elephant and eat like an ant.

To every teacher: your work matters. The future of many children is passing through your hands.

And to parents and government: respect the teacher, support the teacher and value the teacher. Nigeria cannot build a better future while treating the people building its foundation as though they do not matter.

A Better Nigeria Starts With Both Sides

A better Nigeria cannot be built by the government alone. It also cannot happen if citizens refuse to play their own part. Both sides have responsibilities, and the progress of the country depends on how seriously those responsibilities are taken.
