Parent Threatens to Flog Teacher for Disciplining Child in Oredo, Benin City

A parent has reportedly confronted a female teacher in a school in Oredo, Benin City, Edo State, and ordered her to lie down so he could flog her for disciplining his child. Efe Osagie, who shared the information with Next Africa Daily on November 1, 2026, narrated how the incident happened.

According to Osagie, the parent became angry after the teacher disciplined his child and allegedly demanded that the teacher lie down for punishment.

She also revealed that another individual, who was reportedly a pastor, threatened to slap the teacher, questioning why she had corrected the child.

Osagie explained that the teacher's action had not even left any obvious marks on the child, yet the situation reportedly became confrontational.

The incident has raised concerns about the challenges teachers face when correcting children in Nigerian schools. She questioned how teachers could effectively teach discipline when some parents react angrily whenever their children are corrected.

Osagie also expressed concern that parents who prevent teachers from correcting their children may later complain that those same children are not learning or behaving properly.

She called attention to the importance of preserving positive African values, including respect, discipline and cooperation between parents and teachers.

Although children must be protected from abuse, teachers also deserve respect and should be allowed to correct students responsibly.

Celebrate Teachers. Then Pay Them.

Today, we celebrate teachers. But beyond the speeches, messages and “Happy Teachers’ Day” wishes, we need to ask a serious question: Are we really treating our teachers the way they deserve?

Not Everything Is What It Looks Like

Sometimes, people can appear caring and welcoming when they want your child to stay with them. They may make promises and act like the child is already part of their family. But after the child settles in, things can change, and the same child may begin to experience discrimination, neglect or harsh treatment.
