Agu Joy from Lagos has raised concerns over cultural practices that put human lives at risk following the death of a pregnant woman during a masquerade festival in Lagos.
According to the information shared with Next Africa Daily, the woman was returning from a particular place that evening and was unaware that a masquerade festival was taking place. Sadly, she was killed during the incident.
Her death has left her sister devastated, with Agu Joy describing how she cried bitterly following the painful loss.
Speaking to Next Africa Daily, Agu Joy said culture should never be used as an excuse to take another person's life. She questioned the practice of celebrating traditions that put innocent people in danger.

She maintained that any cultural practice that takes the life of a citizen should be regarded as a taboo rather than a tradition worth protecting.
She further explained that cultural rules and regulations are made by human beings and can be reviewed or changed when they become harmful to society.
Agu Joy called on those involved in organising traditional celebrations to think carefully about their actions and understand that the world is changing. She stressed that culture should preserve people's identity and heritage, not become a reason for innocent people to lose their lives.
Meanwhile, the people responsible for the woman's death have yet to be identified, as investigations into the incident are still ongoing. Culture should protect human lives, not destroy them.
