Nigeria’s political environment has tightened further after Minister of Works, David Umahi, delivered a blunt and highly controversial message tying the South-East’s access to federal infrastructure development to its political support for President Bola Tinubu ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Umahi suggested that sustained federal projects in the region may depend on political alignment with the current administration, a statement that has instantly fueled nationwide debate about fairness, governance, and the use of development as a political instrument.
He referenced ongoing federal road and infrastructure projects across the South-East as evidence of renewed attention from the centre, insisting that continued progress would require stronger cooperation and political backing.

The comments have divided opinion sharply. Critics describe the position as politically coercive, arguing that development should not be conditional on electoral loyalty.
Supporters, however, say it reflects the practical realities of Nigeria’s political structure, where alignment often influences the speed and scale of federal engagement.
With the 2027 elections drawing closer, the South-East has once again become a critical focus in Nigeria’s power equation, where infrastructure delivery, political loyalty, and national influence are increasingly intertwined.
