The economic situation in Nigeria has continued to generate concern among citizens, with many questioning the direction in which the country is heading. One of such voices is that of Divine Emmanuel, a resident of Ishieke in Ebonyi State, who spoke passionately about the hardships facing ordinary Nigerians.
In an interview with Next Africa Daily, in Ishieke, Emmanuel expressed worry over what he described as the growing disconnect between the government and the everyday realities of the people. . According to him, there was a time when citizens could afford basic necessities without much difficulty, but things have changed significantly. He noted that food prices have risen sharply, making life more difficult for families already struggling to survive.
Using garri as an example, he explained that the quantity that used to be purchased for about ₦500 now costs close to ₦1,000. The same situation, he said, applies to beans and many other food items that form part of the daily diet of ordinary Nigerians.
He also spoke about the rising cost of accommodation, stating that many tenants now face increased rent despite the poor economic conditions. For him, these developments raise important questions about the future of the country and the welfare of its citizens.
"Where is Nigeria really heading?" he asked during the interview. Emmanuel argued that leadership should go beyond politics and election campaigns. In his view, government officials should pay greater attention to the challenges confronting the people and develop practical solutions to improve living conditions.
He expressed concern that many citizens feel abandoned as prices continue to rise while incomes remain largely unchanged. According to him, the burden of survival is becoming heavier for families across the country.

The situation of civil servants also came under discussion. Emmanuel lamented that some workers depend entirely on their monthly salaries, yet there are occasions when salaries are delayed. He questioned how workers are expected to meet their responsibilities when they are not paid promptly.
For him, the country's challenges require urgent attention. He stressed that Nigeria needed serious economic and social reforms before the 2027 general elections.
"Nigeria needs to be fixed now," he said. "The problems affecting the people should not be ignored. Leaders need to think about the future of the country and make decisions that will improve the lives of ordinary Nigerians."
Emmanuel maintained that good governance should focus on the welfare of citizens, job creation, affordable living costs and timely payment of workers' salaries.
He believes that if these issues are properly addressed, public confidence in leadership can gradually be restored.
His comments reflect the frustrations and concerns shared by many Nigerians who continue to face rising living costs and economic uncertainty while hoping for meaningful change in the years ahead.

Sometimes I wonder why every APC governorship candidate, senatorial candidate and others are campaigning only for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and not even for themselves. Or do they think that being APC candidates, they have automatically won their different seats in the national Assembly or govetnorship of their states?
