The soaring cost of living in Lagos is placing more pressure on residents, with many struggling to keep up as commodity prices continue to rise beyond the income of residents.
For Uzoesi Deberechi Daniel, the daily reality is one of careful spending, fewer trips and constant adjustments just to make ends meet.
Speaking with Next Africa Daily on Friday, Mrs Daniel said the biggest challenge facing her is the widening gap between income and the cost of basic necessities. "The price of commodities in the market keeps rising, but income hasn't moved up," she said.
She explained that transportation has become significantly more expensive, forcing her to cut down on unnecessary movement in order to save money.
Food is another area where the impact is obvious. According to her, she now buys only essential items, leaving out many things she could once afford without much thought.
The economic pressure, she added, has also affected her source of livelihood.
"Business is slower, and earnings don't cover expenses like before," she said, noting that surviving now requires stricter financial discipline thlivelihood.

To cope with the situation, Daniel said she keeps a tight budget and looks for additional sources of income wheneverthlivelihood.
While acknowledging efforts to address the country's economic challenges, she believes that more needed to be done to bring relief to ordinary Nigerians.
She called on the government to focus on practical measures that could reduce transport costs, make food more affordable and create employment opportunities for young people and families battling rising cost of living.
Despite the challenges, Daniel believes Lagos remains a city of possibilities.
"Lagos is still the best place for business, networking and growth," she said, encouraging anyone planning to relocate to the state to do so with a clear plan, a realistic budget and a reliable means of earning a living.
She also urged policymakers to treat the rising cost of housing and the growing unemployment rate as urgent issues, warning that many residents are finding it increasingly difficult to cope with the combined effects of both challenges.

One of the major reasons behind the weak economy in Nigeria and many other African countries is the lack of strong industries and limited investment opportunities. In many developed countries, industries play a very important role in creating jobs, producing goods, and strengthening the economy. However, in most parts of Africa, there are still not enough functioning industries to support large-scale economic growth.
