A Nigerian citizen, Michael Chinonso Otuma, has said that the country’s development should not be left in the hands of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu alone, stressing that all levels of government and citizens have important roles to play.
Speaking during a telephone interview with Next Africa Daily on Tuesday night, June 16, 2026, at 8:30pm, Otuma said many Nigerians are quick to blame the President for the nation’s challenges without properly examining the responsibilities of state and local governments, as well as the citizens themselves.
According to him, Nigeria can only move forward when there is balance and cooperation across all levels of governance.
“The President cannot do everything alone,” he said. “The local governments, state governments, and citizens must also play their parts. When everybody does what is expected of them, Nigeria will become a better country.”
Otuma also emphasized the need for greater civic participation, urging Nigerians to obtain their Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) and actively participate in elections.
He noted that many citizens have lost confidence in the electoral process due to the belief that elections are often manipulated, but insisted that this should not discourage participation.

“We should continue to vote and exercise our franchise,” he said. “If we all participate, we can help shape the future of our country.”
He further stated that disappointment from previous elections should not stop Nigerians from engaging in future democratic processes.
“The fact that some people were unhappy with the last election does not mean future elections will end the same way,” he said. “We must keep trying and continue to believe in the democratic process.”
Otuma called on educated Nigerians to help sensitize others on the importance of voter registration and civic responsibility.
He maintained that national development would be easier to achieve if citizens become more involved in governance and actively hold leaders accountable through democratic participation.
He said that a better Nigeria is possible only when both leaders and citizens work together in fulfilling their responsibilities.

Sometimes I wonder why every APC governorship candidate, senatorial candidate and others are campaigning only for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and not even for themselves. Or do they think that being APC candidates, they have automatically won their different seats in the national Assembly or govetnorship of their states?
