Clear the Drains, Cover the Potholes or Watch Us Drown: Rivers Resident Sends Strong Message to Government

A resident of Port Harcourt, Rivers state, Aaron Michael Abbey, has expressed concern over the recurring flooding experience in many parts of the state during the rainy season, urging the state government to improve road infrastructure and maintain drainage systems to reduce its impact on residents.

Abbey, who spoke with Next Africa Daily on Thursday, June 26, said heavy rainfall remains one of the biggest challenges facing communities across the state.

According to him, residents, especially newcomers, often find it difficult to identify flood-prone areas whenever it rains.

"Some communities become flooded almost immediately after heavy rainfall. Those who have lived in those areas for years know the safer routes, but visitors and new residents usually get stranded because they are unfamiliar with the roads," he said.

He identified Bonny, Okrika, Bonoma and parts of Obolo among communities that experience severe flooding during periods of prolonged rainfall, adding that overflowing rivers frequently leave homes, roads and farmlands under water.

Abbey said the situation has continued to affect farming activities, as many farmers are unable to access their farms while crops are destroyed by floodwaters.

He also noted that transportation becomes more difficult during the rainy season, explaining that commercial drivers often increase fares because many roads become impassable.

"A journey that normally costs about ₦500 could increase by ₦100 or ₦200 after heavy rainfall. In some cases, passengers cannot find direct vehicles and have to board several buses before reaching their destinations," he said.

The resident further expressed concern over the rise in road accidents during heavy rainfall, noting that floodwaters often conceal potholes and damaged sections of roads, making driving hazardous.

He also alleged that criminal activities tend to increase during the rainy season as some criminals take advantage of traffic congestion and poor visibility to attack unsuspecting road users.

Speaking on efforts by the government, Abbey said more attention should be given to maintaining existing roads and drainage infrastructure.

He argued that blocked drainage channels and canals filled with refuse prevent rainwater from flowing freely, resulting in widespread flooding across many communities.

"The government needs to clear drainage channels regularly and ensure proper waste disposal. If drains and canals are properly maintained, flooding will reduce significantly," he said.

Abbey called on the Rivers State Government to prioritise road rehabilitation, drainage maintenance and effective waste management, saying such measures would improve the lives of residents and reduce the annual hardship associated with the rainy season.
