Gods, Drums and Ancient Power: Nigeria’s Delta Festival Draws Global Attention

The 2026 Amaseikumor Festival has opened in Delta State with a vibrant display of culture, tradition and ceremonial dance, drawing attention to one of southern Nigeria’s most celebrated heritage events.

Known for its colorful performances and the famed “Dance of the Gods,” the festival brought together community leaders, residents and visitors for days of celebration marked by drumming, traditional costumes and spiritual rites.

Organisers said the annual event remains a powerful symbol of unity and identity, preserving customs passed down through generations while showcasing the rich heritage of the Niger Delta region.

Crowds lined the streets to witness processions and dramatic dance performances as performers honoured ancestral traditions in a spectacle that blended history with entertainment.

Cultural advocates say the festival is helping place Nigeria’s indigenous celebrations on the global map, as international interest in African tourism and heritage continues to rise.

The Amaseikumor Festival is widely regarded as one of the region’s key traditional gatherings, highlighting the enduring strength of local culture in a rapidly changing world.
