Nigeria’s political atmosphere is heating up dramatically after former Kano governor and influential northern politician, Rabiu Kwankwaso, angrily dismissed claims that he is secretly working for President Bola Tinubu ahead of the crucial 2027 presidential election.
In a fiery response that has sent shockwaves across the country’s political landscape, Kwankwaso declared that “only a fool” would believe he had entered any hidden alliance with the ruling government.
The explosive statement comes at a time when Nigeria’s opposition camps are facing intense pressure to unite against Tinubu’s administration amid worsening economic hardship, rising public frustration and growing political uncertainty.
Kwankwaso, one of the country’s most powerful opposition voices and leader of the Kwankwasiyya movement, insisted that attempts to portray him as an ally of the president are deliberate political propaganda designed to weaken the opposition ahead of the next electoral showdown.

Political analysts say the controversy reflects the growing desperation and fierce behind-the-scenes negotiations already shaping the battle for power in Africa’s most populous nation. With coalition talks involving major opposition figures gaining momentum, rumours of defections, secret alliances and political betrayals have continued to dominate national conversations.
Kwankwaso’s sharp rejection is also being viewed as a strong signal to his supporters across northern Nigeria, where he commands a massive grassroots following capable of influencing the direction of the 2027 race.
His comments are expected to deepen political tensions between rival camps as political parties begin positioning themselves for what could become one of Nigeria’s fiercest presidential contests in recent history.
As economic challenges continue to weigh heavily on millions of Nigerians, the fight for political dominance is rapidly evolving into a high-stakes struggle that could reshape the future of the country and redefine power dynamics across West Africa.
