Fresh historical tension has resurfaced over one of Africa’s most sensitive political turning points after former Nigerian Head of State, Yakubu Gowon, accused the late Biafran leader, Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu, of frustrating what he described as final and decisive peace efforts linked to the 1967 Aburi negotiations in Ghana.
The renewed claims have once again placed the Aburi Accord at the center of global historical debate, with Gowon insisting that repeated attempts to preserve Nigeria’s unity collapsed due to irreconcilable political differences at the negotiating table, despite what he described as sustained efforts to avoid armed conflict.
The Aburi meeting, brokered in Ghana at a time when Nigeria was sliding deeper into political instability, is widely regarded as the last major opportunity to prevent the outbreak of the civil war that would later reshape the country’s identity and alter West Africa’s political trajectory.
According to Gowon’s renewed narrative, the breakdown of understanding during and after the talks triggered a rapid escalation of mistrust between the federal military government and the Eastern Region leadership, ultimately paving the way for a full-scale conflict that engulfed the nation.

The allegations have reignited long-standing disagreements among historians, political analysts, and citizens over who truly bears responsibility for the collapse of the Aburi peace process. While some argue it was a missed diplomatic opportunity on both sides, others maintain that the breakdown was inevitable given the deep divisions of the era.
The renewed spotlight has also reopened emotional reflections on the civil war period, with many observers noting that the Aburi Accord remains one of the most debated “what if” moments in Nigeria’s history, symbolizing a fragile attempt at unity that ultimately failed under pressure.
As the controversy spreads across political and academic circles, the Aburi Accord continues to stand as a powerful reminder of how quickly negotiations can collapse when trust breaks down at the highest level of leadership.
