Vice President Kashim Shettima has lifted the lid on what he described as a politically charged attempt to destabilise Nigeria’s new leadership, alleging that shortly after his inauguration with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, false claims were pushed suggesting he planned to assassinate the President and take over power.
Speaking at a high-profile public event linked to the presentation of a memoir by former Head of State, General Yakubu Gowon, Shettima recounted what he called an early “political storm” that nearly tested the trust at the heart of the presidency.
He alleged that certain individuals—reportedly from his own political environment—approached President Tinubu with claims that he intended to eliminate him shortly after taking office in order to assume control of the government.
Shettima said the situation escalated to the point where President Tinubu personally confronted him, seeking clarity over the allegations that had begun circulating within political circles in the early days of the administration.

According to him, the President ultimately dismissed the claims after hearing his explanation, choosing instead to stand by the partnership they had built during the election period.
The Vice President described the episode as a “carefully engineered attempt” to inject suspicion at the highest level of power, warning that such tactics are often used to fracture alliances, weaken leadership trust, and destabilise governments from within.
He stressed that while political disagreement is normal, weaponising misinformation to pit leaders against one another poses a serious threat to governance and national stability.
The revelation has since sparked intense political conversations, with analysts saying the account underscores how quickly internal power struggles and rumor-driven campaigns can emerge around Nigeria’s top leadership in moments of transition.
