Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has criticised President Bola Tinubu over the country’s worsening security situation following the death of former House of Representatives member Abba Adamu in kidnappers’ custody.
Adamu was reportedly abducted by bandits along the Abuja-Kaduna highway on May 3 and died nine days later while still in captivity, despite efforts by his family to secure his release.
In a statement issued in Abuja through his Senior Special Assistant on Public Communication, Phrank Shaibu, Atiku described the incident as a disturbing sign of the growing insecurity across Nigeria.
He said the former lawmaker’s death highlighted what he called the government’s failure to fulfil its constitutional responsibility of protecting lives and property.
According to Atiku, the continued attacks and kidnappings across the country show that the current administration is struggling to address the security crisis effectively.
He questioned how ordinary Nigerians could feel safe if a former member of the National Assembly could be kidnapped on a major highway and later die in captivity.

The former vice president also lamented the increasing rate of kidnappings in communities, farms, homes and along major roads, arguing that government responses had not matched the seriousness of the problem.
Atiku further stated that insecurity had become a painful reality for many Nigerians, with travellers, farmers and business owners living in constant fear due to persistent attacks by criminal groups.
He criticised the continued insecurity along the Abuja-Kaduna corridor despite repeated assurances from security agencies and significant government spending on security operations.
The opposition figure called on the Federal Government to explain its security strategy and demanded greater accountability and urgent action to tackle banditry and violent crimes.
He added that Nigerians were tired of repeated official statements and needed practical results, decisive leadership and improved security across the country.
Atiku also extended condolences to the family of the late Abba Adamu, the people of Jigawa State and other Nigerians affected by insecurity, while urging the government to treat the security situation as a national emergency.
