I Did My Best for Nigeria, Mistakes Don’t Erase My Service: Jonathan Fires Back at Atiku, Sparks National Political Firestorm

Former Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan has responded firmly to criticism from former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, insisting that while his administration was not without errors, his leadership was guided by genuine commitment to national service.

Atiku had recently questioned Jonathan’s competence and experience in office, remarks that have now triggered a wave of political reactions across Nigeria and beyond.

Speaking at a public event in Abuja, Jonathan acknowledged the realities of governance but defended his legacy.

“If I made mistakes, yes — every leader does,” Jonathan said. “But I can confidently say I did my best for Nigeria.”

The former president, who led Nigeria from 2010 to 2015, stressed that leadership is a continuous learning process, adding that progress in governance should not be judged solely by imperfections but by overall national direction and stability.

His response has reignited debate within Nigeria’s political class, with analysts describing the exchange as part of a broader struggle over legacy, credibility, and influence ahead of future elections.

Political observers say the verbal sparring reflects deeper tensions within Nigeria’s opposition and ruling elite, as key figures reposition themselves in the country’s evolving political landscape.

Reactions are continuing to emerge nationwide, with supporters on both sides defending their preferred leaders as the controversy gains momentum.
