In theory, democracy is simple: the government of the people, by the people, and for the people. It is meant to reflect the will, protection, and welfare of citizens.
But in Nigeria today, many are beginning to ask a painful question has that definition changed in practice Across different levels of governance, a growing number of citizens feel increasingly disconnected from the systems meant to represent them.
The promise of democracy appears, to some, to be drifting toward a structure where decisions are made within political circles, largely insulated from the realities of ordinary people.
This perception has been fueled by repeated concerns about corruption, weak accountability, and policy decisions that many citizens believe do not reflect their everyday struggles.
From economic hardship to insecurity and poor public services, the gap between leadership and lived experience continues to widen.
But the issue is not only about government. It also raises a difficult reflection about society itself. In many cases, civic participation has weakened. Some citizens feel powerless, while others have become indifferent, believing their voices no longer matter.

This silence, whether born of frustration or fatigue, has allowed space for mistrust to grow. Still, democracy cannot survive on government alone.
It requires active citizens who demand accountability, institutions that enforce rules fairly, and leaders who remember that power is temporary and entrusted, not owned.
The danger of the current perception is not just corruption itself, but normalization—the idea that nothing can change. When people begin to accept dysfunction as permanent, democracy loses its meaning before it is officially broken.
Nigeria’s challenge, therefore, is not only political ,it is structural and civic. It demands leadership that is accountable and citizens who are engaged, informed, and willing to insist that governance returns to its original purpose: serving the people.
Because if democracy becomes only a system of power for those in office, then the original promise is not just weakened—it is rewritten.
