The Nigerian Army has issued a powerful warning to soldiers and officers over the misuse of social media and digital platforms, declaring that careless online activities now pose a serious danger to national security as Africa faces a new era of cyber warfare, terrorism, and digital espionage.
Military authorities warned personnel against posting sensitive operational details, troop movements, internal communications, photographs, or unofficial opinions online, stressing that insurgent groups, criminal networks, and hostile foreign actors are increasingly using social media to gather intelligence and undermine security operations.
The alert comes at a critical time for Nigeria, where the military remains heavily engaged in battles against terrorism, banditry, separatist unrest, and organized crime. Security experts say digital platforms have become a dangerous battlefield, with armed groups exploiting online information, propaganda, and surveillance tools to target state operations and spread fear.

The army’s warning also reflects growing concerns across Africa over the weaponization of social media, cyber infiltration, misinformation campaigns, and the exposure of confidential state information in an increasingly connected world.
As tensions rise across several African regions, governments and military institutions are now moving aggressively to tighten digital discipline and prevent security breaches capable of destabilizing already fragile national security systems.
