Nigerian President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has renewed calls for deeper economic integration across Africa, emphasizing trade, investment, infrastructure, and digital commerce as the continent’s pathway to sustainable prosperity.
President Tinubu made the remarks after arriving in Kigali from Nairobi, Kenya, where he participated in the Africa Forward Summit co-hosted by Kenyan President William Ruto and French President Emmanuel Macron.

The summit brought together African leaders, policymakers, and business executives to discuss new models of economic cooperation between Africa and global partners.
Upon his arrival in Rwanda, Tinubu held bilateral talks with Rwandan President Paul Kagame at the Urugwiro Presidential Village in Kigali, where both leaders explored ways to strengthen economic ties between Nigeria and Rwanda.

In a statement issued after the meeting, Tinubu said Africa must urgently improve internal trade and logistics systems if it hopes to compete effectively in the global economy.
“Africa must trade more with itself, move goods faster, connect its markets better, and give its entrepreneurs the continental scale they need to compete,” the Nigerian leader stated.

“Africa must trade more with itself, move goods faster, connect its markets better, and give its entrepreneurs the continental scale they need to compete,” the Nigerian leader stated.
Central to the discussions was the expansion of bilateral trade between Africa’s largest economy and one of East Africa’s fastest-growing business hubs.
Both countries are seeking practical measures to reduce barriers to commerce and improve the movement of goods across African markets.
Tinubu disclosed that Nigeria and Rwanda are currently in preliminary discussions with RwandAir over a proposed flat-rate cargo arrangement aimed at helping Nigerian businesses transport goods more efficiently and predictably across the continent.

Economic analysts say such a logistics framework could significantly reduce shipping uncertainty for small and medium-sized enterprises, many of which struggle with high transportation costs and fragmented customs systems within Africa.
The talks also highlighted growing cooperation under the framework of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA), the landmark continental trade pact designed to create a single African market for goods and services.
Nigeria and Rwanda are among the leading advocates of the agreement, which officially commenced trading in 2021.
Tinubu noted that both countries would continue collaborating to strengthen digital trade, improve market access, and dismantle barriers limiting African businesses from scaling beyond national borders.
Focus on AfCFTA and Digital Trade The Nigerian president also used the occasion to promote upcoming continental trade events scheduled to take place in Nigeria later this year and in 2027.
Nigeria is set to host the AfCFTA Council of Ministers and Digital Trade Forum in June, a gathering expected to focus on e-commerce regulation, digital payment systems, and cross-border trade facilitation.
Tinubu further announced that Nigeria would welcome global investors, entrepreneurs, and policymakers for the Intra-African Trade Fair (IATF) and the Creative Africa Nexus (CANEX) events from November 5 to 11, 2026, with another edition planned for November 2027.
The IATF has become one of Africa’s largest trade and investment exhibitions, serving as a platform for governments and businesses to negotiate deals, promote exports, and deepen commercial partnerships across the continent.
Tinubu’s remarks in Kigali echoed the message he delivered earlier at the Africa Forward Summit in Nairobi and at the Africa CEO Forum in Rwanda, that Africa’s economic transformation will depend less on political rhetoric and more on practical economic cooperation.
“Our future will not be built by speeches alone,” Tinubu said. “It will be built by trade, investment, innovation, and the courage to trust one another’s markets.”
Observers say the Nigerian president’s diplomatic engagements reflect a broader continental push toward economic self-reliance amid shifting global trade patterns, supply chain disruptions, and increasing calls for Africa to maximize the opportunities offered by its population of more than 1.4 billion people.
With AfCFTA projected to become the world’s largest free trade area by number of participating countries, leaders across the continent are increasingly prioritizing regional integration, transportation connectivity, and digital commerce as essential drivers of long-term growth.
Tinubu’s meetings in Nairobi and Kigali are expected to strengthen Nigeria’s role in shaping Africa’s emerging economic architecture while reinforcing partnerships aimed at accelerating continental trade and investment
