Atiku rejects southern presidency push, warns Nigeria’s opposition against political division ahead of 2027

Former Nigerian Vice President Atiku Abubakar has criticized growing calls for a southern-only presidency ahead of Nigeria’s 2027 elections, warning that identity-driven politics could weaken the opposition and hand victory to the ruling camp.

Atiku argued that competence, national unity and electability should take priority over regional power rotation, as opposition parties continue negotiations over possible alliances to challenge President Bola Tinubu’s administration.

His remarks have intensified debate across Nigeria over zoning, political balance and the future of opposition cooperation in Africa’s most populous democracy.

The former presidential candidate also cautioned opposition leaders against what he described as “self-defeatist politics,” urging parties to avoid internal rivalries and fragmentation that could divide anti-government votes before the next general election.
