Uncertainty Grips Diaspora as African Country Freezes Citizenship Pathway ‎

‎ Ghana has suspended its citizenship process for members of the African diaspora, saying it plans to make the system more accessible. ‎

‎Since 2016, people able to prove African ancestry, mainly descendants of transatlantic slave trade victims, have been eligible. More than 1,000 people, including Stevie Wonder, have received citizenship. ‎

‎Applicants have criticized tight deadlines, including a one-week window to submit DNA evidence and supporting documents, as well as high fees: $136 to apply and $2,280 for shortlisted candidates. ‎

‎ The process also includes vetting, orientation and a ceremony overseen by President John Mahama. ‎

‎The government says revised guidelines will be issued “in due course.” The pause has created uncertainty for prospective applicants and investors. ‎

‎ Other countries, including Benin and Sierra Leone, offer similar citizenship pathways based on verified ancestry.
