Ghana has suspended its citizenship process for members of the African diaspora, saying it plans to make the system more accessible.
Since 2016, people able to prove African ancestry, mainly descendants of transatlantic slave trade victims, have been eligible. More than 1,000 people, including Stevie Wonder, have received citizenship.
Applicants have criticized tight deadlines, including a one-week window to submit DNA evidence and supporting documents, as well as high fees: $136 to apply and $2,280 for shortlisted candidates.

The process also includes vetting, orientation and a ceremony overseen by President John Mahama.
The government says revised guidelines will be issued “in due course.” The pause has created uncertainty for prospective applicants and investors.
Other countries, including Benin and Sierra Leone, offer similar citizenship pathways based on verified ancestry.
