Ghana has escalated its battle against illegal mining after the National Anti-Illegal Mining Operations Secretariat (NAiMOS) carried out a major raid on an illegal mining hub at Hotopo in the Ahanta West District of the Western Region.
During the operation, security teams destroyed excavators, dismantled mining camps, and crushed equipment believed to have been used in unlawful mining activities.
Authorities say the operation forms part of Ghana’s renewed national campaign to eliminate galamsey, the term widely used for illegal small-scale mining that has polluted rivers, destroyed forests, and damaged farmland across the country.
The government has faced increasing pressure from citizens, environmental groups, and traditional leaders to take stronger action against operators accused of degrading natural resources. Officials warned that illegal miners continue to use sophisticated machinery and hidden forest bases to evade security forces, making enforcement more difficult. However, they insist the latest Hotopo raid sends a clear message that no illegal mining zone will be tolerated.

The crackdown has attracted attention across Africa, where many countries are facing similar struggles over illegal extraction of gold and other minerals.
Analysts say Ghana’s latest action could inspire stronger enforcement measures in other resource-rich nations battling environmental destruction and revenue losses.
With more raids expected, Ghana’s anti-galamsey war is entering a tougher phase as the country seeks to protect its land, water, and future generations.
