Archaeologists in Egypt have uncovered a shocking discovery that is now drawing global attention, after a 1,600-year-old mummy was found containing a fragment of Homer’s Iliad hidden inside its body.
The rare find was made at the ancient site of Oxyrhynchus, a well-known archaeological location linked to the Roman period in Egypt.
Experts say the papyrus fragment, written in ancient Greek, was carefully placed inside the mummy’s abdominal area during the burial process.
According to researchers, this is the first known discovery of a literary text inside a mummy, as ancient Egyptian burials typically included religious writings meant for protection in the afterlife rather than classical literature.

Historians believe the finding may point to a deeper cultural connection between ancient Egyptian and Greek civilizations during Roman rule.
However, the exact reason the Iliad text was placed in the mummy remains unclear, with experts still debating whether it was symbolic, educational, or ritual-based.
Archaeologists say the discovery could reshape understanding of ancient burial traditions and how literature may have played a role in spiritual practices of the time. Further studies are ongoing as scientists continue to analyze the mummy and the fragile papyrus fragment.
