Former Anambra State Governor and Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, on Monday held a high-level consultation with former President Goodluck Jonathan as part of ongoing engagements ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Obi disclosed that the meeting, which included notable leaders from Nigeria’s South-East region, focused not only on electoral strategy but also on broader national concerns regarding governance and development.
According to Obi, discussions with Jonathan were “frank and thoughtful,” centering on the urgent need to reposition Nigeria along the lines of unity, security, economic stability, and inclusive governance.
He emphasized that the country is currently facing significant challenges, including economic hardship, rising insecurity, and increasing social divisions.
The former presidential candidate stressed the importance of cross-regional collaboration among political leaders, noting that national progress requires collective reflection and decisive action in the interest of citizens.
“Leadership must go beyond personal ambition,” Obi said, advocating for a governance model rooted in competence, character, capacity, and compassion.

Across parts of Africa, a troubling pattern has emerged: periodic waves of hostility directed at Nigerians living and working in other African countries. In South Africa, it has manifested in violent xenophobic attacks; in Ghana, tensions have surfaced through business closures and regulatory crackdowns. The rhetoric is familiar—“they should go back home.” But beneath that language lies a far more complex and uncomfortable reality than simple dislike of a nationality. This moment is not just about Nigerians; it is about economics, identity, governance failure, and the unfinished project of African unity.
