RUSSIA FORCED OUT OF MALI WAR ZONE AS REBELS SEIZE STRATEGIC CITY — SAHEL ON THE EDGE OF FULL BLOWN CHAOS

Russian Africa Corps forces have confirmed they have withdrawn from the northern Malian city of Kidal following coordinated attacks by separatist fighters and Islamist militants.

The group said in statements on social media that it left the city alongside Malian troops after reaching an agreement with the separatist Azawad Liberation Front (FLA).

The FLA has said it has taken control of Kidal and declared the city “free”, although this has not been officially confirmed by Mali’s government.

The withdrawal comes after a series of attacks across Mali over the weekend, with explosions and gunfire reported in several cities including the capital Bamako, as well as Gao, Mopti, Sevare, and other locations in the north and centre of the country.

In a separate incident, Mali’s Defence Minister Sadio Camara was reported killed in a suspected attack near Kati, close to Bamako. Authorities have not yet provided full details.

The Islamist group Jama’at Nusrat al-Islam wal-Muslimin (JNIM) has also claimed responsibility for attacks in several areas, including reports of military activity in Tessit. These claims have not been independently verified.

The Alliance of Sahel States, made up of Mali, Burkina Faso and Niger, described the attacks as part of a coordinated effort to destabilise the region, though it did not provide further evidence.

The Russian Africa Corps, which includes former members of the Wagner group, said wounded personnel and equipment had been evacuated from Kidal and that its operations would continue in other parts of Mali.

The situation in northern Mali remains unclear, with competing claims over control of Kidal and ongoing reports of violence in several regions.
