Russian Africa Corps forces have confirmed they have withdrawn from the northern Malian city of Kidal following coordinated attacks by separatist fighters and Islamist militants.
The group said in statements on social media that it left the city alongside Malian troops after reaching an agreement with the separatist Azawad Liberation Front (FLA).
The FLA has said it has taken control of Kidal and declared the city “free”, although this has not been officially confirmed by Mali’s government.
The withdrawal comes after a series of attacks across Mali over the weekend, with explosions and gunfire reported in several cities including the capital Bamako, as well as Gao, Mopti, Sevare, and other locations in the north and centre of the country.
In a separate incident, Mali’s Defence Minister Sadio Camara was reported killed in a suspected attack near Kati, close to Bamako. Authorities have not yet provided full details.

Africa is the youngest continent on earth, overflowing with energy, innovation, creativity, and ambition. Across the continent, millions of young Africans are reshaping industries through technology, entrepreneurship, education, sports, and entertainment. Yet, despite this youthful population, political leadership in many African countries remains dominated by elderly rulers who have held power for decades.

The history of Africa cannot be discussed honestly without confronting the enduring burden of colonialism. For centuries, European powers entered the continent not as partners in development, but as conquerors, exploiters, and architects of political domination.
