Nigeria’s opposition crisis deepens as PDP insider rejects claims that Wike controls party documents amid escalating 2027 political showdown

Nigeria’s political tensions intensified on Wednesday after senior Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) chieftain Umar Sani publicly dismissed allegations that Federal Capital Territory Minister, Nyesom Wike, is in possession of sensitive party documents, a claim that has fueled weeks of political speculation across Africa’s largest democracy.

The statement comes at a critical moment for the PDP as internal divisions continue to threaten the future of Nigeria’s main opposition force ahead of the high-stakes 2027 general elections.

With rival factions battling for dominance, influence and control of party structures, the controversy surrounding Wike has become one of the most talked-about political issues in the country.

Sani insisted that there was no evidence showing that Wike holds official PDP documents or materials capable of destabilizing the party, pushing back against narratives circulating within political circles and on social media.

Political analysts believe the latest exchange reflects the growing mistrust and deepening fractures among influential PDP power brokers.

Wike, a former Rivers State governor and one of Nigeria’s most influential political figures, has remained at the center of PDP controversies since openly clashing with party leaders after the 2023 presidential election.

His relationship with sections of the opposition party has continued to deteriorate despite repeated reconciliation efforts.

Observers warn that the continued infighting could weaken the PDP’s ability to challenge the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in 2027, especially as Nigerians face mounting economic pressure, insecurity and rising public frustration.

Across Africa, political watchers are closely monitoring developments within Nigeria’s opposition landscape because of the country’s strategic influence on the continent’s democratic stability and economic direction.

The latest comments from Umar Sani are expected to further intensify debate within the PDP over loyalty, internal control and the future leadership of the party as preparations for the next electoral cycle gradually begin.
