President Cyril Ramaphosa has firmly rejected growing calls for his resignation amid renewed pressure linked to the controversial Phala Phala scandal, declaring that he has committed no crime and intends to remain in office.
Addressing the nation on Sunday evening, Ramaphosa dismissed demands for him to step down following developments connected to the Constitutional Court matter surrounding the scandal.
He stated that he would challenge the findings through legal and constitutional channels, insisting that he has the right to seek a review and defend himself within the framework of the law.
“I will not resign. I remain in service to serve you,” Ramaphosa declared during one of the strongest moments of his national address.
The president said he remains committed to completing the mandate South Africans entrusted him with, including rebuilding the economy, protecting democratic institutions, tackling unemployment and stabilising the country during a difficult political and economic period.
He also warned against what he described as forces attempting to destabilise South Africa, vowing that he would continue fighting to defend the country’s constitutional order and democratic future.
The Phala Phala scandal, which has shadowed Ramaphosa’s presidency for years, centres on the alleged theft of a large amount of foreign currency hidden at his private game farm in Limpopo in 2020.
The matter raised serious questions about the source and declaration of the money, whether the theft was properly reported to authorities and allegations that state resources may have been used unofficially during the investigation into the incident.

Ramaphosa’s refusal to resign has sharply divided public opinion across South Africa.
Supporters argue that he is standing firm against political pressure and defending constitutional democracy, while critics believe the scandal has already damaged public trust and weakened accountability at the highest office in the country.
Opposition parties and civil society groups continue to intensify calls for transparency and accountability, arguing that ethical leadership requires more than simply denying wrongdoing.
At the same time, Ramaphosa’s allies insist that he should be allowed to clear his name through the courts rather than be forced out by political campaigns.
Political analysts say the president is now preparing for a prolonged legal and political battle rather than an exit from office.
The controversy is expected to deepen tensions within the ruling African National Congress while adding further uncertainty to South Africa’s already challenging political and economic climate.
With pressure mounting from both opposition groups and factions within his own party, South Africa now enters another intense chapter of political uncertainty, legal confrontation and growing national debate over leadership, accountability and the future direction of the country.
