South Africa is pushing back hard against growing accusations of xenophobia, with influential entrepreneur Vusi Thembekwayo igniting fresh debate across Africa after declaring that the country is being unfairly judged.
Speaking in Nigeria during Workers’ Day events, Thembekwayo delivered a bold message: South Africans are not xenophobic, and the narrative painting them as such is both misleading and dangerous for Africa’s unity.
His remarks come at a sensitive time, as past attacks on foreign nationals especially Nigerians continue to shape perceptions and stir anger beyond South Africa’s borders. But Thembekwayo insists those incidents, while serious, do not define an entire nation.
Instead, he pointed to deeper economic frustrations, unemployment pressures, and systemic challenges as the real triggers behind tensions often misinterpreted as blanket hatred for foreigners.
