Labour unions have delivered a stinging rebuke to government claims of economic progress, warning that growth figures are failing to reflect the harsh reality faced by millions of citizens struggling to survive.
Speaking during May Day celebrations, union leaders argued that the country’s economic trajectory is benefiting only a narrow elite, while the majority grapple with rising living costs, job insecurity, and declining purchasing power.
They insisted that official data suggesting improvement in key sectors does not translate into real relief for ordinary people.
According to labour representatives, inflation, stagnant wages, and limited employment opportunities continue to erode livelihoods, pushing more households into hardship.
They accused policymakers of prioritizing macroeconomic indicators over human welfare, stressing that “growth without impact” is meaningless to workers.

As Africa’s most populous nation positions itself as a key economic driver on the continent, the growing disconnect between official optimism and public experience raises deeper concerns about inclusive growth and social stability.
For many observers, the message from workers is clear: until economic gains are felt at the grassroots, claims of recovery will continue to face fierce resistance.
