Wealth War in Africa: Nigeria's Abdulsamad, South Africa's Rupert Battle for Billionaire Supremacy

Nigerian industrialist Abdulsamad Rabiu and South African luxury magnate Johann Rupert are locked in a high-stakes race to become Africa’s second billionaire to reach a $20 billion fortune, highlighting the growing competition among the continent’s wealthiest business figures.

Rabiu, the founder and chairman of BUA Group, currently holds a slight lead with an estimated net worth of $19.1 billion. His advantage over Rupert stands at just $100 million, a narrow margin that has rapidly shrunk in recent days after market fluctuations affected both billionaires’ fortunes.

The Nigerian billionaire has emerged as Africa’s top-performing billionaire in 2024, recording an extraordinary increase of $8.96 billion in his wealth since the beginning of the year.

The sharp rise has largely been driven by the strong performance and market valuation of his interests in cement, sugar, and food manufacturing businesses, particularly within Nigeria’s industrial sector.

Rabiu’s growing fortune reflects the continued expansion of his business empire across Africa.

Through BUA Group, he has invested heavily in cement production, infrastructure, agriculture, and food processing, sectors considered critical to Nigeria’s economic growth.

Analysts say investor confidence in the group’s long-term growth strategy has significantly boosted the value of his holdings.

Meanwhile, Rupert, chairman of Swiss luxury goods company Richemont, has seen his net worth decline by approximately $506 million this year.

The decrease is largely tied to changing market conditions and fluctuations in Richemont’s stock performance.

The company, known globally for luxury brands such as Cartier and Montblanc, has faced mixed investor sentiment amid slowing luxury demand in some global markets.

Despite the recent decline, Rupert remains one of Africa’s most influential businessmen and was previously within touching distance of the $20 billion milestone.

His diversified investments in luxury retail, finance, and other sectors continue to keep him among the continent’s richest individuals.

The race between Rabiu and Rupert comes at a time when African billionaires are increasingly gaining global attention for their expanding influence across industries ranging from manufacturing and telecommunications to luxury goods and natural resources.

At present, Africa’s richest individual remains Aliko Dangote, whose vast empire in cement, oil refining, and manufacturing continues to dominate the continent’s wealth rankings.

However, the close contest between Rabiu and Rupert signals a shifting landscape among Africa’s ultra-wealthy elite, with fortunes changing rapidly due to market performance, industrial expansion, and global economic trends.
