Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has launched one of his strongest attacks yet against President Bola Tinubu’s administration, accusing the Nigerian government of driving Africa’s largest economy into what he described as “reckless and opaque economic vandalism” through an aggressive borrowing spree.
The former presidential candidate reacted angrily to reports that the Federal Government is seeking another massive external loan estimated at over $1.25 billion, warning that Nigeria’s future is being mortgaged while millions of citizens battle inflation, unemployment and worsening poverty.
Atiku argued that despite repeated promises of economic recovery and reforms, ordinary Nigerians continue to face unbearable hardship as food prices soar, businesses shut down and the naira struggles under mounting pressure.
He claimed the government’s increasing dependence on foreign loans raises serious questions about transparency, accountability and long-term sustainability, especially as public debt continues to rise at an alarming pace.
The opposition leader further warned that continued borrowing without visible economic transformation could push Nigeria into a dangerous financial trap capable of shaking investor confidence across the African continent.
His comments have intensified political tensions ahead of the 2027 elections, with critics of the Tinubu administration accusing the government of prioritizing debt accumulation over real economic productivity and industrial growth.
The latest controversy is already generating heated reactions across Nigeria’s political space, with supporters of the ruling party defending the loans as necessary measures to stabilize infrastructure and economic reforms, while opposition voices insist the country is heading toward a deeper fiscal crisis that could affect future generations.
