For many Muslims in Mali’s capital, Bamako, this year’s Eid celebrations have been marked not by reunion and travel, but by separation, fear, and restricted movement as jihadist fighters tighten a blockade around the city.
Roads leading in and out of the capital have been heavily disrupted since late April, as armed groups linked to Al-Qaeda’s Sahel network intensified attacks and cut off key transport routes.
The situation has left many residents stranded in the capital, unable to travel to their hometowns for the traditional holiday gatherings that define Eid al-Adha.
Bus stations that are normally packed with travelers have instead become unusually quiet.

Transport operators say the combination of insecurity, fuel shortages, and attacks on convoys has made long-distance travel nearly impossible.
Many families who usually reunite in villages across Mali are instead spending Eid apart for the first time in years.
Beyond travel disruptions, the blockade has also affected the supply of goods, including livestock markets essential for Eid sacrifices. Prices have surged, and availability has dropped sharply, adding further strain to households already coping with economic pressure.
Residents describe a growing sense of uncertainty as the capital remains under pressure from ongoing militant activity, with daily life increasingly shaped by shortages and restricted movement.
