Starting Small in Nigeria, What Really Matters

How much does it cost to start a small business in Nigeria? Many people believe they need millions of naira before they can begin, but I believe a good business starts with an idea, capital and an understanding of the people you want to sell to.

Before starting a business, you need to study your environment. For example, in a student area, some people may prefer buying rice, spaghetti, biscuits, milk and other affordable items rather than soup ingredients. You need to understand what people around you need and what they can afford.

I remember when I was a student and had only ₦2,000 left, with no money expected from home that week. I cut down on personal expenses, including sweets, biscuits, Nutribu and other things I normally bought. I used the money to buy soup ingredients because I already had garri at home. This taught me that people's spending habits can change depending on their financial situation.

Another important thing in business is how you treat customers. My sister once went to buy something, but the seller spoke to her rudely. She became angry and left without buying anything. The seller might have been having a difficult day, but customers may not understand that. This is why business owners must learn to speak politely and treat people well.

From my own experience, I have sold perfumes and soap without having a shop. I carried my products in a sack bag and started by telling my friends about them. Some bought from me, and they could also tell others. I learned that you can start small without waiting until you have everything. Even when you have personal problems, you should not take your frustration out on customers. A simple greeting, a smile and good service can encourage people to return.

Considering the economic situation in Nigeria today, young people also need to think about what they can offer society. Being a graduate is an achievement, but a certificate alone does not put food on the table. We need to think about our skills, the needs around us and how we can earn income.

My mother started her business with a small amount of money, and today, she is doing well. Her experience reminds me that you do not always have to wait until you have ₦1 million before starting. Some businesses require more capital than others, but where possible, you can begin on a small scale and grow gradually.

In my opinion, starting a business requires more than money. You need a good idea, proper planning, an understanding of your customers and the right attitude. Start by understanding what you want to do, who will buy from you and how you can keep your customers.
