Ebola: Nigerians Told to Avoid Kissing, Hugs, Handshakes

A medical expert has warned Nigerians against kissing, hugging and handshaking following the reported confirmation of an imported Ebola case in Abuja.

Professor Oladapo Ashiru, President of the Academy of Medicine Specialties of Nigeria, gave the warning on Wednesday during an interview on Arise Television.

He explained that Ebola spreads mainly through direct contact with the blood and body fluids of an infected person showing symptoms, adding that the virus does not spread through the air. Ashiru urged Nigerians to maintain physical distance, practise good hygiene and take infection prevention measures seriously.

He also called for increased screening at airports, seaports and land borders, as well as strict infection control in health facilities. He urged health workers to identify and isolate suspected cases promptly.

According to the Federal Ministry of Health, the woman involved in the reported case arrived in Nigeria from Uganda, developed symptoms on October 7 and tested positive on October 20. The ministry also disclosed that 44 contacts had been identified.

The warning comes as attention turns to preventive measures and the need for Nigerians to remain alert to public health advice.
