Nigerians have criticised the Federal Government’s plan to introduce a fuel tax, saying it will bring more hardship to people already struggling with the high cost of living.
The Minister of Finance, Taiwo Oyedele, said the tax would be introduced when the economy improves and people earn enough money to pay for it. He said the money would be used to build roads and help control future fuel price increases.
However, a tailor, Niyi Osundare, said many business owners were already struggling because of the high cost of fuel and poor electricity supply. He warned that the new tax could force more businesses to close.
A lawyer, Kunle Onatade, also questioned the government’s promise to use the money for road construction. He said Nigerians needed help to cope with the rising cost of living.
Business groups have also warned that the tax could increase the cost of transporting goods and running businesses, making life more difficult for Nigerians.
