ABUJA, In a dramatic show of unity aimed at ending months of internal crisis, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) on Tuesday adopted Senator Sandy Onor as its sole consensus presidential candidate for the 2027 election, boldly declaring itself the only opposition force capable of unseating the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
The high-profile endorsement in Abuja served as a public relaunch for the party, with leaders insisting that internal turmoil is now over. Dr. Samuel Ortom, Chairman of the Presidential Primary Election Committee; the party’s National Chairman, Mohammed Abdulrahman; and Onor himself all presented the consensus process as definitive proof that the PDP has regained stability and political direction.
Announcing the outcome of nationwide consultations, Ortom formally declared Onor the party’s flagbearer.
“Having conducted consultations across the 36 states of Nigeria and the Federal Capital Territory, I am pleased to formally announce that we have adopted Professor Sandy Onor as the consensus candidate of our great party for the 2027 presidential election,” Ortom stated, drawing thunderous applause from delegates.
National Chairman Abdulrahman emphasized the party’s singularity of purpose, noting, “We are here for endorsement because we have only one person aspiring to the office of President in 2027.”
In his rousing acceptance speech, Onor proclaimed that the PDP had finally moved beyond its prolonged internal battles. “Today, we have reclaimed our party, the legacy party, the Peoples Democratic Party. Today, we have a leadership that is united, purposeful and visionary,” he said.

Onor also took a sharp swipe at opposition coalitions, particularly the African Democratic Congress (ADC), dismissing it as an unstable alliance driven by personal ambition.
He referenced the failed “messianic complex” of figures like Peter Obi and Rabiu Kwankwaso, likening the coalition’s collapse to an “Andrews Liver Salt effect a bubble that rises suddenly and disappears within days.”
Acknowledging past divisions, Onor insisted the party had now “crossed the Rubicon” and was consolidating ahead of 2027. He pledged a pan-Nigerian disposition focused on tackling rural poverty, which he described as the root cause of insecurity and economic hardship.
“We cannot be poor in the midst of so much. Insecurity is fundamentally a function of rural poverty,” Onor argued, vowing to properly fund local governments to engage young people and reduce banditry and terrorism.
He concluded by dismissing rumors of lingering factions: “For some time now, the erroneous impression has been created that there are two PDPs. Nothing could be further from the truth. There is only one PDP.”
