The African Action Congress (AAC) has announced the resignation of Omoyele Sowore as its National Chairman, just hours after he was confirmed as the party’s presidential candidate for the 2027 general elections.
In a statement issued on Tuesday following the party’s primaries in Abuja, the AAC revealed that Sowore, a well-known human rights activist and former presidential candidate, has officially stepped down from the party’s top leadership position. Samuel Ajeigbe has been appointed as the new National Chairman.
The primaries saw Sowore emerge as the AAC’s flagbearer through a unanimous endorsement by delegates and party leaders in the Federal Capital Territory. He was presented with the party’s flag amid cheers from supporters across the country.
Accepting the nomination, Sowore reiterated that the AAC was founded to build a “new Nigeria” free from corruption, insecurity, and poor governance. He thanked party members for their commitment despite political and economic challenges.

Sowore also took aim at the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), accusing it of incompetence and trying to manipulate public perception ahead of the 2027 elections.
He dismissed claims that over 10 million APC members participated in President Bola Tinubu’s presidential primary, stating, “There is no way APC can have 10 million people as members. I can guarantee you that APC cannot boast of 10,000 members.”
The leadership change marks a major transition for the AAC as the party intensifies its preparations for the 2027 polls.
