Injustice Alleged as Ex-Abia Lawmaker Nkechi Nwaogu Quits APC, Cites Sham Primaries
Former Senator Nkechi Nwaogu, who once represented Abia Central and also served in the House of Representatives, has resigned from the All Progressives Congress (APC). She confirmed her exit in a telephone interview on Thursday, saying injustice within the party forced her decision.
Her departure followed the APC primary election in her zone, which saw her rival, Emeka Atuma, declared winner. Nwaogu insisted no proper election took place in her area. “There was no election. I know my advantage in my zone. When I saw the shenanigans of them trying to destroy the party we built, I knew they were losing touch,” she said. She also accused certain party members of abandoning the truth and undermining the APC’s interests.

In recent weeks, rumors had swirled that Nwaogu was in talks with the NDC, even as APC leaders reportedly tried to persuade her to stay. Meanwhile, the Abia APC has said it has not received any formal letter of resignation. State Publicity Secretary Uche Aguoru told PUNCH Online: “If she has left the party, I have no knowledge. We are yet to get any letter to that effect.”
Her exit adds to ongoing debates over the legality of defections after the closure of political party membership registration ahead of the 2027 elections.
