In a stunning political development, former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has clinched the presidential ticket of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) for the 2027 elections, securing a landslide victory that has sent shockwaves through the opposition ranks.
The ADC’s returning officer, Tunde Ogbeha, announced the final results late Wednesday night, revealing that Atiku amassed a staggering 1,846,370 votes overwhelmingly defeating his two main challengers. Former Rivers State Governor Rotimi Amaechi trailed far behind with 504,117 votes, while businessman Mohammed Hayatu-Deen managed only 177,120 votes.
The party disclosed that its total registered membership stands at 3,113,599, with 2,527,977 votes cast in the primary election.
However, the euphoria of Atiku’s victory has been met with sharp resistance. Both Amaechi and Hayatu-Deen have already rejected the outcome, citing widespread irregularities, lack of transparency, and gross violations during the primary process.

In a related twist, ADC chieftain Dele Momodu has shed light on why former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi quietly walked away from the ADC before the primary. According to Momodu, Obi knew he stood little chance against Atiku’s formidable political machinery.
Speaking during an interview on Arise TV, Momodu described Obi’s defection as a “calculated and respectful move,” adding that the former LP candidate did not deceive himself about his prospects.
“Obi stepped aside after weighing Atiku’s nationwide network and political strength,” Momodu said, noting that Atiku remains a powerhouse whom Obi once considered a political ally.
As the 2027 election race begins to take shape, Atiku’s ADC victory while commanding faces legitimacy challenges from within, setting the stage for a potentially explosive political battle ahead.
