Morocco has recorded a strong start to the year in its tourism sector, reinforcing its position as one of Africa’s most dynamic travel destinations.
In the first quarter alone, the country welcomed approximately 4.3 million tourists, representing a 7% increase compared to the same period last year.
This steady growth highlights the continued recovery and expansion of Morocco’s tourism industry following global travel disruptions in recent years.
A particularly notable surge occurred in March, when tourist arrivals jumped by 18% year-on-year.
This sharp increase has been largely attributed to improved air connectivity, including the expansion of international flight routes and increased seat capacity from key markets in Europe, the Middle East, and North America.
Additionally, Morocco’s strategic efforts to diversify its source markets, targeting travelers beyond its traditional European base, have begun to yield measurable results.
Financially, the tourism sector is also performing strongly. By the end of February, tourism revenues had already reached $2.3 billion, marking a significant 22.2% increase compared to the same period last year.
This rise reflects not only higher visitor numbers but also increased spending per tourist, suggesting a shift toward higher-value tourism offerings such as luxury accommodations, cultural experiences, and niche travel segments like eco-tourism and desert excursions.
Tourism remains a critical pillar of Morocco’s economy, contributing approximately 8% to the national GDP. The sector also plays a vital role in employment, supporting jobs across hospitality, transportation, handicrafts, and local services.
Government initiatives aimed at enhancing infrastructure, promoting sustainable tourism, and improving visitor experiences have further strengthened the industry’s resilience and appeal.
These latest figures build on Morocco’s already impressive performance in 2023, when it attracted 19.8 million visitors—making it the top tourist destination in Africa.
That figure represented a 14% increase over previous years, underscoring the country’s growing global appeal.
With its rich cultural heritage, diverse landscapes ranging from the Sahara Desert to the Atlas Mountains, and historic cities like Marrakech and Fez, Morocco continues to position itself as a leading destination for international travelers.
Looking ahead, industry analysts expect continued growth as Morocco prepares to host major international events and further expands its tourism infrastructure.
If current trends persist, the country is well on track to set new records in both visitor numbers and tourism revenue in the coming years.
