Senior Al-Shabaab Commander Captured in Major Somali Counter Terrorism Operation

A top Al-Shabaab commander, Salaad Macalin Cusmaan Cabdiyow, also known as “Salaad Dheere”, has been captured in a precision counterterrorism raid in southern Somalia, marking a major victory in the fight against insurgent networks.

The arrest, carried out in the village of Soo-Maray, five kilometers west of Mubarak in Lower Shabelle, was the result of intelligence-driven coordination by elite units of the Somali National Army (SNA), specifically the 203rd Unit of the 20th Brigade under the Gorgor Commandos.

Officials say Salaad Dheere was a high-value target, responsible for planning and coordinating militant operations across Lower Shabelle, a region long plagued by persistent Al-Shabaab activity.

“The operation was executed flawlessly, with minimal resistance,” confirmed security sources. “This is a tactical and operational breakthrough for Somali forces and our partners, including the African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM).”

The capture reflects Somalia’s growing intelligence capabilities and improved coordination among security agencies, highlighting the effectiveness of joint operations in dismantling militant networks.

In recent years, Somalia has intensified military campaigns against Al-Shabaab, combining local forces with international support to systematically weaken the group’s influence and infrastructure.

Security analysts say the arrest of a high-ranking commander like Salaad Dheere signals real progress in Somalia’s long-running battle against terrorism.

It demonstrates that intelligence-led strategies remain critical in counterinsurgency efforts across Africa, strengthening both operational confidence and public trust in security forces.
