Nigeria declares national emergency as Tinubu moves against surging insecurity and poverty crisis

Nigeria’s President Bola Tinubu has declared insecurity and poverty as national emergencies, warning that the twin crises are now serious threats to economic stability, jobs, and national survival in Africa’s most populous country.

Speaking during the 2026 Workers’ Day commemoration in Abuja, Tinubu represented by Secretary to the Government of the Federation George Akume said the government can no longer treat both challenges as routine policy issues, stressing that they directly undermine productivity and livelihoods across the country.

He said Nigeria cannot achieve meaningful development where citizens live in fear or struggle to afford basic necessities, describing the situation as a “critical national challenge requiring urgent and coordinated action.”

The president outlined ongoing government responses, including expanded social intervention programmes targeting vulnerable households, job creation initiatives, and security reforms aimed at stabilizing communities affected by violence and economic hardship.

Tinubu also pointed to infrastructure investments and labour reforms under his administration as part of broader efforts to revive economic confidence and reduce poverty levels nationwide.

The declaration adds renewed urgency to Nigeria’s struggle with insecurity and inflationary pressures, issues that continue to shape public debate and economic outlook across West Africa and beyond.
