In a brutal pre-dawn confrontation that underscores the escalating intensity of Nigeria’s counterinsurgency war, troops of Operation Hadin Kai (OPHK), backed by the Nigerian Air Force, wiped out at least 61 ISWAP militants during a failed infiltration attempt on Malam Fatori in Abadam Local Government Area of Borno State.
Security sources confirmed that the insurgents launched a coordinated assault in the early hours of Wednesday, advancing on foot under the cover of darkness and deploying armed drones in what appeared to be a calculated and desperate effort to overwhelm the 68 Battalion’s defensive position.
The attack, reportedly channeled through the Bravo Company frontage from the Duguri axis, was met with crushing resistance. What the terrorists anticipated as a breakthrough turned into a slaughter.
Ground troops, locked in close combat, were reinforced by precision airpower in a tightly synchronized operation that left the attackers exposed and outmatched.
Military insiders described the engagement as a decisive demonstration of integrated warfare. Four separate air interdiction strikes targeted identified enemy concentrations, obliterating formations and shattering the insurgents’ operational momentum.
The combination of aerial dominance and disciplined ground maneuver denied ISWAP any room to regroup or retreat in formation.
“Their fighting capability was decimated,” one source said. “They were fixed, engaged, and neutralised in large numbers. The remaining elements fled in disarray toward the Arege area.”

In a significant regional twist, allied air assets from neighboring Niger Republic reportedly joined the assault, executing rapid strike passes that intensified pressure on the retreating fighters.
A full battle damage assessment from those strikes is still underway, but early indications suggest the insurgents suffered further losses while attempting to escape.
Despite the ferocity of the encounter, Nigerian forces sustained minimal casualties. Four soldiers were wounded, all described as minor injuries, and have since been stabilized.
The failed assault raises urgent questions about ISWAP’s evolving tactics, including its growing reliance on drone warfare.
Yet it also signals a stark reality: attempts to seize territory or intimidate frontline positions are being met with overwhelming, coordinated force.
In Malam Fatori, the message was unmistakable — any attempt to breach Nigeria’s defenses will be answered not with hesitation, but with annihilation.
