Broken Systems, Broken Results: Dafinone Diagnoses Nigeria’s Development Crisis

Senator Ede Dafinone has urged Nigerian youths to embrace discipline, innovation, and institution-building to drive sustainable development, warning that the nation risks squandering its vast potential without translating capacity into productivity.

He delivered this message during the 18th convocation lecture at Delta State University, titled “Harnessing Nigeria’s Potential: Strategies for Sustainable Development.”

Addressing the graduating class of 2026, Dafinone described Nigeria as richly endowed, with over 37 billion barrels of crude oil, vast agricultural resources, and a youthful, talented population, yet plagued by poverty, unemployment, weak institutions, and brain drain.

He framed this contradiction as the “Nigerian paradox,” stressing that the country’s main challenge is not lack of talent but failure to build effective systems that sustain productivity.

He warned against confusing potential with productivity, noting that many youths operate within dysfunctional systems marked by delays, strikes, and weak structures.

Dafinone emphasized that sustainable development requires long-term, disciplined institution-building, not slogans or short-term policies.

Citing countries like South Korea, Singapore, and Rwanda, he argued that strong systems, not just individual talent, drive national progress.

On the global economy, he highlighted artificial intelligence and the knowledge economy as opportunities, pointing to successful Nigerians like Davido and Burna Boy as examples of globally competitive talent.

However, he cautioned that technology cannot replace weak institutions.

He advised graduates to focus on critical thinking, lifelong learning, and competence over credentials, while acknowledging the “japa” trend but urging capable youths to contribute to national development from within.

Dafinone also criticized Nigeria’s poor execution culture, stressing the need for consistent, detail-oriented implementation.

Vice-Chancellor Samuel Ogheneovo Asagba praised the lecture as insightful and encouraged graduates to apply its lessons in their future endeavors.
