William Ruto President of Kenya has publicly highlighted the role of Aliko Dangote in addressing one of Nigeria’s most persistent economic challenges, fuel scarcity, despite the country being one of Africa’s largest crude oil producers.
Speaking at a high-level infrastructure summit in Nairobi, Ruto pointed out the longstanding contradiction in Nigeria’s energy sector: a nation rich in crude oil reserves that for decades struggled with chronic shortages of refined petroleum products.
These shortages frequently led to long fuel queues, price volatility, and significant disruptions to transportation and commerce.
According to Ruto, the turning point came when Dangote spearheaded the development of the massive Dangote Refinery in Lagos.
The project, one of the largest single-train refineries in the world, was designed to significantly reduce Nigeria’s dependence on imported refined fuel, which had been a major drain on foreign exchange and a source of supply instability.
Ruto emphasized that for years, Nigeria exported crude oil only to re-import refined products due to insufficient domestic refining capacity.
This structural inefficiency not only strained public finances through fuel subsidies but also exposed the country to global supply shocks.
By contrast, Dangote’s privately financed refinery represents a shift toward local value addition, processing crude domestically and stabilizing supply within the region.

Using this example, Ruto made a broader case about Africa’s development trajectory.
He argued that the continent possesses both the capital and technical expertise needed to solve its own infrastructure and energy challenges, rather than relying heavily on external partners from Europe or Asia.
He framed Dangote’s investment as evidence that African-led solutions can be both scalable and transformative.
Ruto further revealed that East Africa is now exploring the possibility of establishing a regional refinery modeled on the Nigerian example.
Such a project, he suggested, could enhance energy security, reduce import dependency, and support industrial growth across multiple countries in the region.
The Kenyan president’s remarks come at a time when many African nations are reassessing their energy strategies amid rising global demand, fluctuating oil prices, and the push for economic self-sufficiency.
By spotlighting Dangote’s initiative, Ruto positioned intra-African investment and innovation as a critical pathway toward long-term stability and growth in the energy sector.

Sometimes I wonder why every APC governorship candidate, senatorial candidate and others are campaigning only for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and not even for themselves. Or do they think that being APC candidates, they have automatically won their different seats in the national Assembly or govetnorship of their states?
