2027 Shockwave: Gongola Elders Revolt Against APC Candidate Imposition, Demand Fair Battle for Adamawa Power

A major political storm is gathering inside Nigeria’s ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) after respected elders from the historic Gongola region openly rejected alleged plans to impose a governorship candidate ahead of the 2027 elections.

The influential leaders, speaking through the Gongola Peoples Forum, called for a free, transparent, and competitive primary election in Adamawa State, warning that any attempt to handpick a candidate could divide the party and trigger a serious internal crisis.

The Gongola region, which remains politically powerful in northeastern Nigeria, is seen as a key force in deciding Adamawa’s future leadership.

Their public intervention now places fresh pressure on APC power brokers as the battle for control of the state intensifies.

Spokesman of the elders, retired Major General Haladu Anthony Hananiya, said democracy must be respected and no aspirant should be denied the right to contest fairly.

He warned that party members at the grassroots level would resist any move that sidelines voters and imposes leaders without due process.

The group also reaffirmed support for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s national leadership but stressed that loyalty to the presidency should not be mistaken for accepting political manipulation in Adamawa.

Several high-profile politicians are already positioning themselves for the APC governorship ticket, making Adamawa one of the earliest and most closely watched battlegrounds in Nigeria’s march toward 2027.

Analysts say the confrontation could become a defining test of internal democracy within the ruling party and may influence political alignments far beyond Adamawa State.
