Imagine opening a payment app and feeling like you just stepped into your favourite social feed larger-than-life images, reaction buttons, cashback offers tailored to what you actually buy, and the ability to give a virtual high-five to the local barbershop or restaurant you love. That’s exactly what Venmo is serving with its biggest makeover in years.
Over the coming months, the peer-to-peer payment giant is rolling out a complete redesign the most significant since 2021.
The new feed ditches the old plain-text list of “who paid whom” for a vibrant, visual experience. Think bigger photos, GIFs that pop, and quick-action buttons like “Pay Again” or “Say Thanks.” You can even react to payments the same way you would to a friend’s Instagram story.
And here’s the kicker: Venmo will now surface personalised cashback offers from brands you already shop with, plus product suggestions based on your spending history. But that’s not all. Two fresh tabs “Send” and “Money” are launching in the coming months.
The Send tab puts your most frequent contacts front and centre as profile icons, so no more hunting through old transactions. You can also split bills with up to 30 people, send gifts, and even schedule payments in advance.
The Money tab becomes your financial command centre, where you can manage expenses, access Teen Accounts, and dabble in crypto.
Then there’s the new Rewards tab a one-stop shop for limited-time deals and the home of Venmo’s Stash program, which gives you up to 5% cashback deposited directly to your Venmo Mastercard when you shop with favourite brands in the app.
Perhaps the most intriguing addition is the “Give a Shoutout” button. Tap it under any payment to endorse a local business you love.
As Venmo’s senior vice president explained, younger users especially Gen Z — deeply want to support and amplify the merchants they care about.
This feature turns every coffee purchase or haircut payment into a public thumbs-up, a form of “social proofing” that helps small businesses shine.
So why does all this matter right now? Timing is everything. PayPal, which owns Venmo, is restructuring to spin Venmo off as a standalone business unit widely seen as laying the groundwork for a potential sale.
Rumours are already swirling that Stripe has expressed interest in buying PayPal outright.
In that context, this splashy redesign looks less like a routine update and more like a masterful window-dressing job ahead of a transaction.
By the time autumn arrives and the full redesign reaches all users, Venmo wants to be irresistible whether to its 90 million users or to a deep-pocketed suitor.
For African readers watching the global fintech space, this matters because it signals where the industry is headed.
The lines between payment apps, social networks, and loyalty platforms are blurring fast. Young users from Lagos to Nairobi to Johannesburg increasingly want apps that don’t just move money but also reward loyalty, enable community endorsements, and feel as engaging as TikTok or Instagram.
Venmo’s overhaul is a crystal-clear message: the future of finance is social, visual, and personal.
Will a Stripe or another global player eventually scoop up Venmo? That remains to be seen. But one thing is certain Venmo just made itself a whole lot harder to ignore.
