Internal Strife in Nigeria’s Main Opposition as Debate Over Support for President Tinubu’s 2027 Bid Escalates

Nigeria’s Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), the country’s leading opposition party, is facing deep internal divisions over whether to back incumbent President Bola Tinubu in the 2027 general election, according to local political reporting.

As party leaders work to resolve a prolonged leadership crisis ahead of a national convention scheduled for March 29 in Abuja, a faction led by PDP chair Kabiru Tanimu Turaki has declared that the party will not endorse Tinubu’s re-election, a position that has intensified fault lines within the party.

The controversy arises because some influential PDP figures — including Federal Capital Territory Minister Nyesom Wike have publicly expressed support for Tinubu, who is seeking a second term under the rival All Progressives Congress (APC).

This has fueled disagreement between the party’s negotiating camps.

The Turaki faction backed by leaders such as Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde argues that it would be improper for an opposition party to endorse the candidate of the ruling party, saying that the PDP must maintain its identity and contest the 2027 elections with its own candidates.

Efforts to calm tensions have included discussions with party elders and stakeholders, including prominent figures like Chief Olabode George and former Senate President Dr. Bukola Saraki, who have urged reconciliation and stressed the importance of the PDP fielding candidates across the ballot.

The unresolved debate highlights the significant challenges facing Nigeria’s opposition as the West African nation approaches a key election cycle that will test the strength of its democratic institutions.
