Nigerian Opposition Leader Warns Arrest of Religious Host Signals Democratic Backsliding

Former Nigerian presidential candidate Peter Obi has sounded the alarm over what he says was the arrest of a prominent Islamic cleric who hosted him during a recent visit to Kaduna State.

In a statement shared on his official X account early Tuesday, Obi said he was informed that Sheikh Ahmad Tijjani Umar, a respected Kaduna-based religious figure, was detained by security authorities shortly after welcoming him on Sunday.

Obi described the alleged arrest as a troubling sign for the future of Nigeria’s democratic freedoms. He said the incident reflects “a deeply troubling state” where basic rights such as freedom of speech and movement are under increasing pressure, and where those perceived as political opponents face harassment and unjust treatment.

“This development underscores the deeply troubling state of our nation and our democracy,” Obi wrote, warning that such actions undermine the rule of law and democratic principles.

He emphasized that suppression and intimidation should have no place in a functioning democracy.

Obi urged authorities to respect civil liberties and democratic norms in their dealings with citizens.

Meanwhile, the Kaduna State Police Command said it had no official record of Umar’s arrest, with a spokesperson noting they had not been briefed on the matter.
