Some countries, including India, have reportedly declined to accept several ambassadorial nominees put forward by Bola Tinubu, citing diplomatic considerations related to the remaining tenure of the current administration.
Sources within Nigeria’s Presidency and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs indicate that India maintains an informal policy of not granting approval to ambassadors nominated by governments with fewer than two years left in office.
Among those affected is career diplomat Ambassador Muhammad Dahiru, who was nominated as Nigeria’s envoy to New Delhi.
According to officials familiar with the process, Indian authorities are exercising their diplomatic discretion to delay or potentially withhold the agrément required for his formal appointment.
“They do not accept ambassadors from administrations with less than two years remaining in office. We are already seeing indications of that position,” a Presidency source disclosed.
This development follows earlier internal concerns that some of Tinubu’s ambassadorial nominees could encounter resistance from host nations due to the limited duration left in the current administration’s term.
Under established diplomatic protocol, a receiving state must issue formal approval, known as agrément, before a nominated ambassador can assume duty. Without this consent, the envoy cannot be officially deployed.
While India’s stance appears to be the clearest signal so far, officials suggest that other countries may adopt similar positions.
Such a trend could complicate Nigeria’s efforts to fully restore ambassadorial representation across its foreign missions.
